What is an EREV, and how is it different from a hybrid?
Range-extended electric vehicles represent a middle ground between fully electric and plug-in hybrid models. These vehicles are fundamentally driven by an electric motor; however, when the battery starts to run low, an internal combustion engine generates electricity only it does not directly drive the wheels, unlike in plug-in hybrids.
This approach can be particularly attractive in regions where charging infrastructure is not yet sufficiently developed, such as certain rural areas of China or even Southeast Asia. The EREV acts as a kind of “safety net” for electric mobility: users can enjoy the benefits of electric driving without worrying about the lack of charging stations.
iX5 REx: BMW’s answer to the challenge?
According to the German publication Automobilwoche, the Bavarian manufacturer is currently testing a new model, the iX5 REx, which could achieve a range of up to 1,000 kilometers approximately 80–100 km purely electric, with the remainder provided by the range-extender function.
The project is not unfamiliar territory for BMW: a similar feature was offered with the i3 model launched in 2013, although it was phased out in 2018. Now, however, new markets, new demands, and new technological opportunities make a redesign timely once again.
Technology partner: ZF
BMW is cooperating with ZF on the development, a company that presented its own EREV technology (eRE and eRE+) at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show. ZF’s systems are capable of outputs of up to 150 kW while offering compact and flexibly integrable solutions for existing electric vehicle platforms. This is particularly important, as manufacturers are increasingly seeking standardized, scalable platforms for the future.
Global strategic decision
For BMW, this is not merely a technological experiment but a genuine strategic shift. The Chinese market already features numerous EREV models, and local consumers are more receptive to hybrid-electric solutions that offer uncompromised driving range. The introduction of the iX5 REx could take place as early as 2026 provided that market feedback and development results align.
What’s next?
The perception of EREVs is divided: some see them as a step backward, others as a sensible compromise. One thing is certain, however—customers are still seeking the balance between zero emissions, real-world range, and everyday usability.
BMW’s move is not just about developing a new model, but also sends an important message: even premium manufacturers are willing to rethink the electric future if market conditions and technology justify it.
